Vallakottai Murugan Temple

Vallakottai Murugan Temple is located in Vallakottai village about 9 km away from Sriperumbudur and is 1200 years old. The temple houses a 7-feet-long statue of Lord Murugan which is the tallest idol of the God in Tamil Nadu.

The idols of Teyvayanai and Valli, consorts of Lord Murugan, are placed on his either sides. Legends say that King Bhagareethan had constructed the temple, on the advice of Sage Dhurvasur, to get back his kingdom. Another legend says that the demon Vallan used to torture the Devas, and Lord Murugan had defeated him to restore peace to the region and the temple was built to honour him.

The temple has a tank, known as Vajra Theertham which is believed to have been established by Vajra-ayudham of Lord Indra. Lord Indra used this tank to worship Lord Subramanya. This temple also houses the statues of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Ambaal, Utsava Murugar and Sri Shanmugar.

Vallakottai temple is reverred in Thirupugazh composed by Arunagirinathar, a 15th-century saint. The temple is revered in eight verses by the saint. As per a legend, the saint worshipped Murugan at Thiruporur temple and was on his way to Thiruthani Murugan Temple. During his sleep, a divine voice directed him to go to Vallakottai temple. He woke up to realise it was the order of Murugan and he visited the temple. The temple is considered equal in importance to the Arupadaiveedu, the six abodes of Murugan.

Carvings of Thapas Kamakshi and Lord Rama embracing Sri Anjaneyar can be found on the pillars of Ardha Mandapan.
